BeyondBMI - Case study
Overview
BeyondBMI is a leading healthcare service provider offering sustainable weight loss through a medically-led, multi-disciplinary program. With a combination of doctors, dietitians, and health coaches, BeyondBMI delivers a 12-month, clinically-supported journey that helps individuals living with obesity achieve long-term results.
Having already launched a successful web application with approximately 250 users, BeyondBMI wanted to enhance customer experience and drive growth by creating a native mobile app. Their goal was twofold: increase engagement with current users and pave the way for market expansion beyond Ireland.
BoatyardX partnered with BeyondBMI to design and deliver a mobile app that would seamlessly integrate with their existing platform, provide a best-in-class user experience, and support their long-term growth ambitions.

The Challenge
- Deliver an intuitive, high-performance mobile experience for an existing base of medical users.
- Ensure a smooth integration with existing core back-end APIs and third-party components.
- Balance speed, cost, and quality to deliver value early without compromising the long-term vision.
- Support the App Store submission process, accessibility compliance, and ensure functional readiness for both iOS and Android platforms.
- Enable BeyondBMI’s internal team to stay focused on core platform development while BoatyardX delivered the mobile experience.

How BoatyardX Built BeyondBMI
BoatyardX began the engagement with a short Discovery phase to clarify goals, user needs, and technical constraints. Together with the BeyondBMI team, we defined core journeys, prioritised features, and created a delivery roadmap focused on supporting current patients first, with flexibility for future growth.
Our multidisciplinary team – comprising a Project Manager, Product Designer, Mobile Developer, and Back-End Engineer – worked as an integrated unit alongside BeyondBMI, collaborating on a shared backlog. The team focused on rapid delivery, releasing an MVP within 16 weeks that included key features such as appointment booking, weight tracking, chat with health coaches, and survey completion.
We also ensured the app was ready for App Store and Play Store submission, handling both functional readiness and accessibility compliance from the start.
Our Approach
- Collaborative and Integrated Delivery
We provided an experienced, multidisciplinary team that worked closely with BeyondBMI from the start. Planning was aligned with business milestones, and we maintained momentum through shared ownership of a single, prioritised backlog. - Incremental Value Delivery
With an MVP-first mindset, we helped shape a release strategy that delivered value quickly to existing users. This approach allowed for real-time user feedback, de-risked new customer onboarding, and ensured a smoother product evolution. - Product and Tech Partnership
BoatyardX supported BeyondBMI in shaping their product roadmap, prioritising features, and navigating key design decisions. We provided leadership across technology and product to help BeyondBMI avoid early mobile delivery pitfalls. - Accessibility and Design System
Accessibility was embedded from the outset to avoid costly redesigns and meet compliance standards. A scalable design system was also implemented to accelerate future updates and reduce total cost of ownership. - App Store Launch Support
We dedicated focused effort on preparing the app for App Store and Play Store submission – an often underestimated step. Our experience ensured a smooth approval process with minimal rework.
The Solution
- A native mobile application that integrates with BeyondBMI’s existing platform and backend.
- Core features tailored for existing users, including appointment scheduling, chat with health coaches, weight tracking, and personalised progress dashboards.
- Built-in flexibility to expand with new onboarding and user acquisition features in uture releases.
- Full support for mobile-native functionality such as camera access and push notifications.
